Matthew Stewart (philosopher)
. Matthew Stewart is a philosopher and author currently living in Santa Barbara, California. He is the author of The Truth About Everything, Monturiol's Dream, The Courtier and the Heretic, and The Management Myth (2009). He has a bachelor's degree from Princeton, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Oxford. He worked as a management consultant prior to writing full-time.

Matthew Stewart was born into a military family the second of three children. He has an elder brother Robert and a younger sister Elizabeth. His father was Colonel James Stewart who served in the US Marines. His mother Mia Stewart was a feisty beauty from a prominent Catalan family.
He followed his brother Robert to Princeton in 1980 before being awarded the Fulbright Scholarship to Worcester College Oxford University in 1985. He was awarded a Dphil by Oxford in 1987 for what was regarded by his contempories as a brilliant thesis on the philosopical writings Nietche.
During his time at Oxford he met David Lonsdale then a law undergraduate. Stewart was inspired by Lonsdale and has acknowledged his influence on his writings.
After Oxford Stewart spent 10 years pursuing a career in management consultancy. He detested the work. His years in this field were reflected in his recent book the Management Myth. Nevertheless during these years he secured a substantial fortune.
In 1998 he married his wife Cathy who is also a writer. The couple have two children. They moved to Santa Barbara in 2001 and then to New York in 2009.
